Man Gets Run Over By Train

Christmas is train time at our house.  Santa started a tradition of the boys getting a G scale train or track.  The train comes out when the tree goes up and gets put up when the tree gets put up.

Santa adds something to the train or track every Christmas.  He brought enough track this year to add what he had brought before so that the train would go around the kitchen and back to the living room and then around the tree.

Knox had the idea to video tape the train going through the house and around the tree.  But while video taping something got on the track....

Hopefully we have fixed the debris from getting on the tracks again!

Each boy will have their own train.  Right now, only Knox has one.  In a few more years, Hamp will have his own.  The hope is that they will keep these for their children.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Planting Wheat

With rain on the way, Hubby got up early and took Knox with him on a mission.  A mission he has been wanting to do for the last three years.  The mission that has gotten away from him due to time and lack of opportunity.  But now the time and opportunity have jumped in his lap and he is living his mission!

Hubby is planting wheat!

I know it sounds crazy.  I have listened to the dream take shape.  Now I get to watch the kid glitter in his eye!  He has had the fields plowed for over a week now.  As soon as he plowed, we got over 1/2 inch of rain and three days of no sun.  This caused the field to be to wet for him to plant.

Now we are not complaining about the rain!  Lord knows we need it!  Hubby gambled on the weather reports and lost that round.  But he gambled again and won....

Hopefully, in about 4 months time, I'll be posting pictures of him threshing his first wheat crop!  This means fresh wheat for us.

Christmas at Timms Mill

A couple of Saturday's ago, we loaded up our feed corn and headed across the river to Timms Mill.  This is a grist mill that first milled corn in 1784.

Timms Mill

A little background from their website...

The historic mill was originally built on the banks of the Six and Twenty Creek in 1784 by Mr. Isaac Timms. Through successive generations it was moved to two more locations along the creek and is now standing on the site established in 1898. The mill was in continuous use until 1960, and now since the renovation the 14 foot waterwheel is once again turning to power the original stones in the mill.

In 2001, David and Lisa Wortham bought a run-down gritsmill with some property. They decided to restore the mill rather than tear it down, and the restoration was completed in 2004. Since then, we have been grinding fresh grits and cornmeal for local (or not so local) restaurants and produce stands; or, if you’d prefer, get your grits hot off the mill on most Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Each year, around the first of December, David and Lisa Wortham host Christmas at Timms Mill.  They have fresh grits, cider, and bluegrass music.

The store selling cornmeal, girts, cider and ice cold bottled cokes!

Serving white and yellow girts with hot cider....Yummy!

They invite friends who bring cool things to watch in operation....

A working portable cotton gin.  We lost Hamp in the cotton a couple of times...
Since we had an abundance of feed corn that needed sucking, we ran the corn sucker at the mill.

After we the sucked the corn, we then put the corn through a corn sheller.

Hamp spent most of his time trying to but every leaf he could find in the water through the water wheel...

Hamp playing in the water!

Christmas at Timms Mill is one of the highlights of our year!  And the yellow girts are just to "die" for!!

2013 CSA

K and H Farms
Fall 2012

For the past 2 years on K and H Farms, we have been growing pastured poultry.  Our chickens are grown in bottomless pens in our pastures, scratching, eating bugs and grass while enjoying the fresh air and sunshine!  You will find our chickens to be much healthier and happier than the average chicken.

They are fed grains and minerals but get between 20 to 30% of the nourishment from the pasture they live on.  Each day they are moved to new pasture.  Their flavor is richer and more vibrant than those bought in the grocery store...our chickens actually have a flavor!  These are the chickens that we proudly put on our own dinner table!

Starting the Spring of 2013, K and H Farms is going to offer Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) to our friends, family and community!  This allows you to own a “share” of our chickens.  Each CSA will last for 3 months.  You will come to our farm once a month and pick up your chicken.  You pay upfront (or by payments) a set price for your “share” of chickens each month.  These will be whole chickens that you can freeze until you are ready to feed the family or just yourself!  We do not cut up the chicken but will gladly show you how to when you pick up your order.

There will be 3 CSA pick-ups for 2013...
Spring CSA March 30th, April 27th, May 25th Order by:  Dec 21, 2012
Summer CSA June 15th, July 13th, August 17th Order by:  Mar 1, 2013
Fall CSA September 7th, October 12th, November 16th Order by:  May 31, 2013

There will be 5 different “shares” to choose from for 2013....

The Hatching Chick 2 chickens/month $57.00/CSA ~$3.75/lb
The Rooster and the Hen 4 chickens/month $105.00/CSA ~$3.50/lb
The Hen and Her Chicks 8 chickens/month $195.00/CSA ~$3.25/lb
The Rooster and His Hens 10 chickens/month $225.00/CSA ~$3.00/lb
The Whole Chicken Coop 15 chickens/month $310.00/CSA ~$2.75/lb

*Payment for CSA needs to be paid in full before the first delivery date. You must pick up your order between 9:00 am-12:00 pm at the Farm or the Stephens County Farmers Market.  Deliveries will be made for a $10.00 extra charge per delivery date.

Knowing who raises your food empowers you to have control for healthier food choices for you and your family while strengthening your local economy!  Know your farmer, Know your food!  We welcome all our CSA members to come any time to help move pens, move chickens, or process chickens.  We have an open door policy because we consider YOU apart of our farm!!  We look forward to getting to know you and your family...

**Due to state regulations, please remember that you are buying a LIVE chicken!  If you would like us to process it along with the chickens that we process for ourselves, just let us know and we WILL process them for FREE for you!

Pastured Poultry

My family and I are growing pastured poultry.  These are chickens that are allowed to grow in the field, scratching and eating bugs and enjoying the fresh air and sunshine.  We have found our chickens to be much healthier and happier than the average chicken!  Their flavor is much richer and vibrant than those bought in the grocery store.  These are chickens that we proudly put on our own dinner table!  We are taking orders for those of you who would like to try pastured poultry and taste the difference.

This is how it works...you order your chickens, we grow them out (which takes about 12 weeks), and you then have the choice of taking your chickens home to do your own processing or we can process them for you free of charge.   You are buying a whole chicken that is suitable for cooking that day or going into your freezer.  We can show you how to cut it up and de-bone if you would like, but this is something that we do not do when we process.

We are looking at processing once a month.  Sometime around the second or third of each month.  We will let you know exactly what days we will be processing after April.  We are not sure of dates because we have not confirmed shipping dates of the chicks.  The price will be $2.75/pound.  They should be from 3 to 4 pounds each.  This is about what an organic chicken or free range chicken is in the grocery store.  The difference here is you get to know your farmer and are buying local.  This money will be staying in this community!

Please copy and past the following site in your URL to place your orders.

 https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dDM0TUpLWjQ1UkdlUXdOV0hLV3djbEE6MQ

The order form will let us know how many chickens you would like starting April 21-November (maybe December).  This way we can put in our orders way ahead and be sure to have the chickens ready!   If we see we will have too many orders on a particular date, we will add in another date and may need to process twice that month.  Please remember that if you place an order you are expected to pay for your order and pick it up that day unless you make plans ahead of time.

Please share this with friends and family who are interested in healthier, more flavorful chicken and would be interested in buying chicken directly from the grower!  You are even welcomed to come and watch them grow if you would like!!

We're so excited to start our second year growing pastured chickens!   We hope you will try our chickens and help to support local farmers!
