How many times have you been getting ready to cook a recipe and realize that you are missing one or two ingredients? This happens to me quite often. I was sent a message by a dear friend about how to make your own powdered sugar and it got me thinking. Why don't I just share this and other frugal baking tips I have learned! Many of these have saved a recipe for me and I found that it was much cheaper to make than to buy the ingredient.
Some you may know, others you why not, and you might even have your own tips that you can share. So enjoy and tell us your frugal cooking tips.
- Powdered sugar...1 1/2 cups of sugar and 3 Tbsp of cornstarch. Blend into a fine powder.
- Buttermilk...1 Tbsp of lemon juice or vinegar and enough sweet milk to measure 1 cup. Don't mix.
- Sugar...for every cup of honey you use, reduce the other liquids by 1/4 cup and reduce bakng temperature 25 degrees.
- Heavy Cream, whipped...2/3 cup of well-chilled evaporated milk
- Chocolate Square...3 Tbsp of cocoa and 1 Tbsp of fat (Crisco)
- Sweetened Condensed Milk...1/2 cup of warm water, 1 cup plus 2 Tbsp powdered milk, and 3/4 cup of sugar. Blend well in blender
